Sumant Chugh was born in Chandigarh India, and received his medical degree from Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India, in 1990. He did his residency in Internal Medicine at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, India and at Newton – Wellesley Hospital, Newton MA, followed by a Nephrology Fellowship at Boston University Medical Center. He was appointed Instructor in Medicine at Boston University in 1999, and then moved to Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2000. He joined the Division of Nephrology at UAB as Associate Professor of Medicine in 2007. He is a prior recipient of the ASN Carl W. Gottschalk Research Scholar Award (2002), the NKF Young Investigator Grant Award (2004) and the Faculty Recognition Award (2004), and has been a NIH funded investigator since 2001.
